In my review of the companion album, "Turk's Delight," I spoke of my interest in the repertoire of Turk Murphy's Band, the way he brought back rare and interesting blues, rags and stomps from the jazz of the 1920's. I also spoke of my disappointment at the bottom-heavy almost mechanical sound of the band on much of these two albums, and talked about this as a weakness of the San Francisco revival of traditional jazz in the 'forties and 'fifties - a misunderstanding based perhaps on hearing the sometimes poor recording technology of jazz records from the 'twenties (though I have to say that the Armstrong Hot Fives and Sevens and the Morton Red Hot Peppers usually sound much clearer and more emotionally subtle by comparison, and even the earlier King Oliver Creole Jazz Band Sides have a deeper blues feeling and more lyrical quality). At the same time, after listening to reissues by Turk Murphy on Good Time Jazz and the British Lake label, I'm not sure if the problem is the band or the recordings.. The Murphy Band was never up to the Oliver, Armstrong and Morton originals, but it could beinteresting and fun. Another fantastic and fully re-mastered Turk Murphy collection highlighting what truly was a great jazz band. This set follows on from the success of Jasmine's previous release (JASCD439 - Turk's Delight). There are some real delights on this set including the elusive "Smokey Mokes" and rare but nonetheless fine material such as "Mack The Knife" and "Maryland". Almost all the tracks have never been on CD before and a full discography is included with comprehensive notes on the band and recordings.
