The rs485 has a termination resistor which is important because often this isn't a good idea depending on your network.Second the half duppex switch is triggered not by the RTS pin like it should be (pin 17) but is triggered via a transistor and the tx pin. This works but has trouble at high speeds. Your only other option is to move a 0 ohm jumper so that you can control via pin 4. Which is not the RTS pin, so the kernel driver won't toggle it, you have to put it in your code which again makes high speed situations impossible.I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner.Haven't tried the CAN bus side, but I looked at the schematic. This is a 2-channel isolated RS232 expansion HAT designed for Raspberry Pi, adopts the SC16IS752+SP3232 solution, with
embedded protection circuits such as power supply isolation, ADI magnetical isolation, and TVS diode, etc.

It is easy to control the 2-channel RS232 via SPI interface. Due to its fast communication, stability, reliability, and safety, it is
an ideal choice for fields like industrial automation.
