Goodnight Moon: Lullaby for Soprano and Orchestra:at our store, we stock over 2000 models, so if you see the manufacturer, but not the model, don't be shy - give us a call and we will be happy to check! GOODNIGHT MOON is likely in the library of every child in the country - or at least it has been read to every child by teachers or parents or grandparents or others. It is a wonderful old book (written 1947) by Margaret Wise Brown, beautifully illustrated, that is meant as a lullaby for children as they prepare for sleep. It is a big helping of comfort as the child says goodnight to not only to the toys and the safety of the room, but finally goodnight to the stars and the moon. This version of a musical setting for soprano and orchestra was composed by Glen Roven, a conductor of the first rank. The story is related by soprano Lauren Flanigan and though her vocalizing is its usual lovely timber, the enunciation of the text is covered by both her vocal technique and by the writing of the musical lines. But in the long run that does not make a difference as most of us know this little book by heart anyway! Roven's writing is melodic and thick and luminous in passages where it should be luminous. He has a keen sense of instrumentation that aids the magic of this text. The second work on this CD is THE RUNAWAY BUNNY, another book by Margaret Wise Brown (1942). The story takes that moment in childhood where independence raises its head and the child thinks, for a moment at least, that leaving the home is a possibility for adventure. The work is set as a Concerto for Violin, Reader and Orchestra by Glen Roven and here the composer's gifts are much more apparent. He uses a large orchestra to gain the fabric that is most apt for the story. The Reader is famed actress Kate Mulgrew who is absolutely magical! The solo violinist is Sirena Huang and she manages to offer the difficult solo lines with great agility. The orchestra for the recording is the ISO Symphony - the InterSchool Orchestra of New York - a youth orchestra with a fine sound. The conductor is George Stelluto who manages to make both of these new works work! This is a fine little addition to the music library. From the audience applause this is obviously a live recording. We should be hearing a lot more from composer Glen Roven. Recommended. Grady Harp, February 12max 75% off, wholesale, max 55% offGoodnight Moon: Lullaby for Soprano and Orchestra

Review

Composer-conductor Glen Roven now gives listeners of all ages these thrilling orchestral settings of Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. For each work, Roven has wisely taken his lead from the author s text, aptly choosing a human voice as the centerpiece of his poignant exploration of the Great Green Room of Goodnight Moon, which at heart is a lullaby; and pitting a solo violin (the incorrigible bunny) against the full force of the orchestra (the loving, all-knowing mother, the universe at large) in the brilliantly variegated epic battle of wits that is The Runaway Bunny. There can be little doubt that Brown herself would have been pleased with what the composer has done. For everyone else, these companion works re-open two childhood classics we perhaps thought we knew, and let us experience them afresh, in all their eloquent simplicity, tenderness of heart, and joy in what Brown once called the first wonder at the world. --Leonard Marcus, Author

This offering is, in its own way, on the exalted level of Prokofiev s Peter and the Wolf , or Britten s The Young Person s Guide to the Orchestra. --Fanfare Magazine

All Abuzz About Bugs!

We are an online community of naturalists who enjoy learning about and sharing our observations of insects, spiders, and other related creatures.

We enjoy the opportunity to instill in others the fascination and appreciation that we share for the intricate lives of these oft-maligned creatures.

Our Mission

Using the best resources we have access to, we are creating a knowledgebase to help each other and the online community.

Our Method

We collect photographs of bugs from the United States and Canada for identification and research.

We summarize our findings in guide pages for each order, family, genus, and species.

Making New Discoveries

More than just a clearinghouse for information, this site helps expand on the natural histories of our subjects. By capturing the place and time that submitted images were taken, we are creating a virtual collection that helps define where and when things might be found.

We capture never-before-seen behaviors and we have photos of species that you won't find anywhere else on the web.
